Causes & Symptoms
Babies suffer from reflux when the ring of muscle between their oesophagus (food pipe) and their stomach is not fully developed. Food and milk can easily leak out and travel back up the food pipe because of this.
Infant reflux is rarely serious and most likely becomes less common as the baby gets older. If your infant is suffering from reflux and is 18 months or older, it may be worth consulting a doctor.
What are the symptoms of infant reflux?
- Back arching
- Irrtability
- Incessant crying
- Swallowing or gulping after burping or feeding
- Coughing or hiccupping when feeding
- Bringing up milk, being sick shortly after feeding or regurgitation
- Not gaining weight as food is not staying down
Your infant may show signs of reflux, but may not bring up milk or be sick. This is known as Silent Reflux.

Treatment
Reflux during infancy is very common, and the good news is that there are safe and effective treatments for it.
Gaviscon Infant sachets are designed to prevent reflux and regurgitation by stabilising the stomach contents.
Each sachet contains approximately 21mg of sodium, so if your infant has been placed on a low sodium (salt) diet, you should consult your doctor before you administer the product.
Do not use Gaviscon Infant with other thickening agents, or with infant milk preparations containing a thickening agent.
